What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
When you make a Lasting Power of Attorney and give someone you trust the power to act on your behalf, that person becomes what is known as your Attorney and you become the Donor.
Your Attorney then has the authority to perform important tasks and make decisions for you that would otherwise not be possible. For example, this could be making new financial arrangements and accessing bank accounts.
Why do I need a Lasting Power of Attorney?
Every year 1000s of UK citizens suffer an accident or illness that prevents them from being able to carry out normal everyday tasks. Having an LPA in place means that your spouse, partner, relation or friend can act on your behalf. This could involve paying bills or applying for loans, or making decisions about your medical treatment.
What if I don’t have mental capacity?
A Lasting Power of Attorney must be made while you have full mental capacity. If you suffer an accident or some form of physical or mental illness and are deemed unable to make such an important decision then you will be unable to create one. This can leave your family and/or your business in a very precarious situation.
“This is why it is so important to make an LPA when you are fit and well…„
Are there different types of LPA?
